The M&E Skills Shortage: What’s Really Going On?

Posted on 23 April 2025

The demand for skilled professionals at an all-time high.

The Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Building Services sector is booming across the North-West. Alongside the growth, a persistent problem continues to challenge the industry: the shortage of skilled talent.

At ravensearch, we speak with M&E professionals every day — from Project Engineers and Estimators to Site Managers and Directors — and the same concern keeps coming up: “We’re struggling to find the right people.”

So what’s really behind the M&E skills shortage, and more importantly, what can be done about it?

What’s Causing the Shortage?

1. An Ageing Workforce

Many seasoned M&E professionals are approaching retirement age, leaving a growing gap that isn’t being filled at the same rate by new entrants.

2. Increased Demand for Talent

Construction activity in the North-West has surged, driven by commercial developments, residential projects, and sustainability initiatives. The result? More roles than candidates.

3. Lack of Early Career Development

There’s been a decline in the number of young people entering M&E apprenticeships and trade pathways, especially in key roles like Quantity Surveyors and Mechanical Estimators. Without early investment in training and mentorship, we risk falling further behind.

What Roles Are Most Affected?

While the shortage spans many areas, we’re seeing the biggest gaps in:

  • Estimators & Estimating Managers

  • Quantity Surveyors

  • Project Engineers

  • Site Managers

  • Project Managers

These positions require a mix of technical expertise, commercial awareness, and project experience — qualities that take time to develop and aren’t easily replaced.

What Can Be Done?

For employers, investing in staff development, promoting long-term career growth, and working with specialist recruiters who truly understand the market can make all the difference.

At ravensearch, we’re deeply embedded in the North-West’s M&E sector. That means we’re not just filling roles — we’re connecting businesses with the right people for long-term success.
