The Opportunity
Our client, an established M&E engineering specialist based in Wigan, is looking for an Electrical Estimator to price the electrical scope across their live bids.
Pricing a new-build school and pricing an electrical refurbishment inside a working hospital are two different exercises. Here you do both, often in the same month.
The refurbishment side is where the estimating gets interesting. Access is restricted to evenings, weekends or shutdown windows, the existing installation has to be surveyed rather than read off a drawing, and the allowance made for working around a building in use is often the difference between a tender that wins and one that wins badly. Those judgements are worth more here than shaving margin off a cable schedule.
This is a permanent role in Wigan, £55,000 to £65,000 depending on experience, plus a car or car allowance, an annual bonus and a full benefits package.
About the Business
Repeat clients change what an estimate is for. When the same trusts, authorities and estates teams come back year after year, a price is not a one-off punt: it is a position the business has to defend, deliver against, and then price alongside next time. That tends to produce a more careful estimating function, and a contractor that would rather lose a bid than win one it cannot build.
Estimating sitting in the same building as design and delivery matters more than it sounds. A question about whether a containment route is realistic gets answered the same afternoon, by the people who will install it, instead of being priced on an assumption and corrected on site six months later.
What You’ll Be Doing
Preparing accurate electrical estimates for tender submissions across live bids
Reviewing technical drawings, specifications and scope documents to establish what a project actually requires
Sourcing and comparing supplier and subcontractor pricing to build competitive, substantiated rates
Identifying risk, exclusions and value engineering opportunities within each tender
Pricing refurbishment work around access restrictions, shutdown windows and existing installations
Supporting bid submissions and attending tender meetings where required
Working closely with the pre-construction and operational teams so pricing stays grounded in how the job will be built
What We’re Looking For
A proven electrical estimating background within M&E or building services
Strong working knowledge of electrical systems and installation practice
Proficient with estimating software and Microsoft Excel
Confident interpreting technical drawings, specifications and tender documentation
Commercial awareness, with the attention to detail a competitive tender demands
A clear communicator, comfortable working across pre-construction and delivery teams
Relevant electrical qualifications or a trade background are preferred, though a solid estimating record matters more here than the route you took into it.
•Ownership of the electrical price on the bids you are given
•New build and refurbishment, priced side by side
•Pricing into hospitals, laboratories and schools rather than standard shells
•Sat alongside design and delivery, not at arm’s length from them
•Producing take-offs for somebody else to turn into a price
•A generalist M&E seat with electrical as one line among many
•New build only, where the existing installation is never the problem
•A back-office role, away from the people who build the job
What’s on Offer
New build and refurbishment side by side, rather than the same project type repeating
Design and delivery in house, so technical queries are answered by the people who will build the job
Support for professional development, in a team that is collaborative rather than competitive
