The Opportunity
Our client, an established M&E engineering specialist, is looking for a Project Director to take overall accountability for mechanical and electrical delivery on a major project in Bath.
Most project director roles on a single scheme are contracts. This one is permanent, because the business already has the work that follows it.
The role covers both disciplines, which is less common than it sounds. A good number of director-level M&E posts are a mechanical person with an electrical manager alongside them, or the reverse. Here the coordination between the two is the thing most likely to cost money on site, so it sits with one person, along with the commercial position: cost, forecast, change and margin.
The initial programme runs for twelve months, with the team expected to carry on to the projects that follow it in the region. This is a permanent role in Bath, £80,000 to £90,000 depending on experience, plus a full benefits package.
About the Business
Highly serviced facilities in regulated environments are a particular kind of delivery problem. The services are the reason the building exists rather than a layer inside it, the compliance regime applies all the way through construction instead of arriving at handover, and the client’s own operation usually carries on while the work happens. Programme slippage in that setting is not only a commercial matter.
The pipeline behind this project is what makes the appointment permanent, and it is the part worth weighing properly. Twelve months on its own is a contract. Twelve months with named work behind it in the same region is a career move. Worth asking about directly.
What You'll Be Doing
Taking overall accountability for M&E delivery, from mobilisation through commissioning and close-out
Leading the project management team across both mechanical and electrical disciplines
Owning the programme, the resourcing strategy and the delivery plan, and intervening on risk early rather than reporting it late
Holding the commercial position: cost control, forecasting, change management and margin protection
Acting as the senior point of contact for the client and main contractor, and representing the project at board level
Overseeing coordination between the mechanical and electrical scopes so gaps do not open up on site
Setting and maintaining health, safety and quality standards across the project
Overseeing procurement strategy for major plant and subcontract packages
Carrying the team on to the projects that follow in the region
What We're Looking For
A strong M&E project leadership background, at Director, Senior or Lead Project Manager level
Experience delivering large-value M&E projects from mobilisation through to handover
A mechanical or electrical background, with the confidence to lead both disciplines
Proven commercial awareness and cost management across a project of scale
The presence to hold senior relationships with clients and main contractors
Experience leading project teams and specialist subcontractors
SMSTS and CSCS, alongside relevant M&E qualifications
Full UK driving licence
Experience in industrial, process or otherwise operationally sensitive environments is an advantage, though not essential. Candidates based in or around Bath are preferred, though the business will support travel or relocation and funds on-site accommodation for anyone travelling in.
•Overall accountability for delivery, mobilisation through to close-out
•Leading the project management team across mechanical and electrical both
•The commercial position as well as the programme
•The senior face to the client, the main contractor and the project board
•A single-discipline director with the other side handled elsewhere
•Delivery oversight with the commercial numbers owned by somebody else
•Inheriting a team and a programme that are already running
•A role that ends when the first project does
What's on Offer
Real authority over a major project, rather than oversight of decisions made elsewhere
A stable base of work in the region, rather than one project and then a search
Design and maintenance capability in house, behind the delivery team
